Stewart Lee – How I Escaped My Certain Fate

It’s brilliant, a short kind of autobiography/memoir detailing how he went from semi-popular cult comedy figure half of a double act to near-obscurity and then came back via a short interlude in musical theatre which went a bit squelchy when he nearly got prosecuted for blasphemy. It’s got transcripts of three of his stand-up shows which he annotates so furiously that several pages are just footnotes and shows what he was trying to do and where he thinks it worked and where he thinks it didn’t. His wit is so scorchingly dry it burns the paper, yes the actual paper burned in my hands and now the book is gone. I would lend it to people, but it burned, it’s burnt, you can’t have it.
